The Shropshire chairman of the Chartered Institute of IT today urged web users to learn more about safety during Get Safe Online awareness week.

Chris Pallett, of Bespoke Computing in Telford, helps businesses across Shropshire to ‘Get Safe Online’, and will be supporting the UK’s national internet security awareness initiative as it hosts its sixth annual awareness week starting on Monday November 15.

Get Safe Online Week encourages web users to take time out of their week to learn more about internet safety and to make sure that their computers are properly protected. It reaches out to consumers and small businesses through competitions, events and PR activity.

“Our core message is simple,” said Tony Neate, managing director of GetSafeOnline.org. “The risks are serious but prevention is easy. A few hours are all you need - it's a small price to pay compared to the huge hassle of dealing with viruses, identity theft and online fraud.”

Mr Pallett adds: “Get Safe Online is the UK’s national internet security awareness initiative. “A joint partnership between the Government, the Serious Organised Crime Agency (SOCA), as well as public and private sector sponsors from the worlds of technology, communication, retail and finance, the initiative educates, informs and raises awareness of internet security issues to encourage confident, safe use of the internet.”

The initiative provides a comprehensive range of advice to help internet users protect their computers and themselves against a number of dangers including identity fraud, online scams, and viruses, spyware and malware.

GetSafeOnline.org is supported by the Cabinet Office, Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS), Home Office, Serious Organised Crime Agency (SOCA), HSBC, Microsoft, Cable & Wireless, Ofcom, PayPal, Gumtree, VeriSign and the National Fraud Authority.
